This is an Original Sheet of Stationery from the Famed CINERAMA DOME cinema on Hollywood Boulevard which opened on November 7, 1963 for the world premiere of Stanley Kramer's "IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD."This cinema was built in record time of 16 weeks, being completed literally, a matter of hours before the world premiere. The dream cinema of then Cinerama head and Pacific Theatres founder William Forman.
Originally conceived for the three-projection Cinerama presentation concept, by the time construction had begun, Cinerama was in the single lens presentation of Ultra Panavision or 70mm. Eventually the Cinema did had three Cinerama projectors installed, but much later. And, also, the original Dome and Parking Lot surrounding (in the original concept was to have an office tower but that plan was scrapped early on). Eventually, Pacific Theatres built and opened the surrounding freestanding cinemas known as the Arclight Cinemas. Both the Dome and Arclight have been closed since the Pandemic. Eventual outcome, is till up in the air. But, I do not see this being but a short term dilemma.
The Cinerama Dome opened with the aforementioned "Mad World," on November 7, 1963, and that film ran for 66 weeks (or 1 year, 3 months and 2 weeks). It was followed with Cinerama's presentation of THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD which opened February 23, 1965 and ran for 42 weeks; followed by Cinerama's BATTLE OF THE BULGE, opening December 21, 1965 and running 27 weeks until Cinerama presented BATTLE FOR KHARTOUM on June 28, 1966 which ran for 23 1/2 weeks. Cinerama then presented GRAND PRIX on January 17, 1967 for 43 weeks; with CAMELOT (the first Non Cinerama film to play here) opening November 7, 1967 (exactly 4 years to the date of IAMMMMW) and ran for 51 weeks. Then back to single lens Cinerama features with ICE STATION ZEBRA on October 29, 1968 for 27 weeks followed by Cinerama's incorrectly titles KRAKATOA, EAST OF JAVA (which is actually West of Java) on May 20, 1969 running 23 weeks. Other films that played this magnificent cinema include: the representation of THIS IS CINERAMA for 13 weeks, in 1973, THE DAY OF THE JACKAL, THE STING, MAME, THE GREAT WALDO PEPPER, RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER, GHOST STORY, E. T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIA, STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK, BACK TO THE FUTURE, OUT OF AFRICA, ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS, SHORT CIRCUIT, STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME, and numerous others.
